Elon Musk Releases All Tesla Patents to the Public Dylan Duarte June 12, 2014 I’m not a cynical person. I’m not the type to say something “restores my faith in humanity,” because my faith in humanity is fairly unwavering. If you do need that confirmation though, here it is: Tesla has just released all of their patents to the public in an effort to save the world. According to Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and real-life Tony Stark, saving the world is exactly what Tesla has been trying to do from the beginning. They’re still a business, however, so they patented their technology to prevent larger car companies from copying their designs and just running them out of business. Only that didn’t happen because larger car companies are doing very little in the way of electric transportation. Besides, Tesla doesn’t see other electric cars as their competition, but rather the overwhelming amount of gasoline cars. In that spirit, Tesla is releasing their patents in hopes that others will replicate and build upon their technology platform and the world will start seeing a lot of zero-emission cars. It’s a grand gesture, but more than that, it’s a practical one. If the big car companies aren’t going to lead the way in the eco-friendly vehicle movement, that leaves it to smaller companies like Tesla, who will hopefully benefit greatly from this shared technology.
