Apple is set to give away a gift card worth $10,000 when the App Store hits 50,000,000,000 apps downloaded. There is a counter over at Apple’s website, and after a quick study, shows roughly 1,000 apps per second being downloaded. By our guestimation, the 50 Billionth app should be downloaded just before midnight on May 11th, 2013 PST.

Apple previously gave away $10,000 when the App Store hit 10 Billion downloads on January 14, 2011, and again just over a year later when the App Store hit 25 Billion on March 2, 2012. Fast forward another 14 months, and this time Apple is adding an incentive as the first 50 app downloads immediately following the 50 Billionth download will also receive a $500 gift card to use in the App Store.

Apple launched the App Store in 2008 alongside the iPhone 3G and iOS 2. The concept has proved wildly successful with all major manufacturers following suit such as Google Play for Android, Blackberry App World and the Windows Store. “App Store” has long been synonymous with Apple and has even seen the Cupertino giant resort to legal action to protect it’s intellectual property. This time around, they’re giving back, big time.
