Xiaomi Becomes Third Largest Smartphone Manufacturer in the World, Briefly Dylan Duarte October 31, 2014 So this is a pretty interesting development. We told you yesterday that Lenovo bought out Motorola in an effort to gain a foothold in the smartphone market. According to various reports and backed up by Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing, that acquistion took Lenovo straight to the number three spot in terms of global smartphone production, behind just Samsung Electronics and Apple. Now Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi is celebrating a new milestone – becoming the third-largest smartphone manufacturer in the world. Despite the order in which these stories hit the press, the fight for the number three position actually went the other way around. Xiaomi issued a press release claiming that an increase in shipments in the third quarter boosted them to the number three spot. Roughly eight hour laters, Lenovo announced they finalized their purchase of Motorola, which kicked Xiaomi right back to number four. A short-lived victory indeed. All this goes to show that despite the staggering amount of smartphones being produced around the globe, the competition is actually airtight. What’s truly impressive about Xiaomi is that they managed to rise so high in the rankings while only serving their home country of China. Becoming the fourth largest smartphone provider in the world while only selling to one exclusive market is no easy feat. via Business Today and Bloomberg Share This With The World!
