Peace Officer Memorial Day Beth Snyder May 15, 2011 Today is the day to take a minute to remember those who have given their lives while protecting and serving their communities. Not too long ago, a city near mine lost its first police officer since some time in the late 1800’s. It was a huge regional coming together of support and sympathy that was at times so painful to watch I simply had to turn off the TV and do something else, but at the same time it was so incredibly moving I felt compelled to watch. Peace officers are being targeted in the US because newly elected governments feel they make too much money, get too many benefits, and in general screw over the budget. As if making what amounts to barely above minimum wage is “too much money”, especially given what they face on a daily basis. What they don’t realize is that we can all sleep in our beds easier because of their existence, and they deserve our support.
