The Emoji Movie Depicts World Inside a Smartphone Michael Kwan April 13, 2016 News Sony Pictures is thinking outside the box here. Or rather, it’s thinking inside the box, peering inside the confines of that flat slab of glass, metal and/or plastic that you carry around with you every single day. Sony Pictures Animation president Kristine Belson outlined the company’s plans for The Emoji Movie during her presentation at CinemaCon last night. The Emoji Movie, as you might be able to surmise from its all too descriptive title, is about emojis. What threw us for a bit of a loop was that the movie will depict the “secret world” that lives “inside your phone.” The emojis will be the actual characters in the movie and they’ll live in place called “Emoji Valley.” It might sound wacky, but looking into these “secret worlds” is not foreign to pop culture movies in the last few years. Wreck-It Ralph did a great job of showing us the world inside our treasured arcade games, just as The LEGO Movie showed us that everything is awesome when you’re part of a team. To be fair, Sony is the company behind Pixels, which wasn’t nearly as good as many had hoped. The point with The Emoji Movie is that not only is this secret smartphone world populated by emojis, but the apps themselves can serve as characters and the various components of your phone, like the homescreen, can have physical counterparts. Sony is partnering with various #brands on this one. Can you imagine an anthropomorphized version of Spotify? Sony sure can and we’ll be able to dive into this secret world on August 11, 2017.
