BlackBerry’s Android-powered Priv didn’t exactly meet expectations, but you can’t keep a good desperate manufacturer down. That’s why the company plans to release two more smartphones this year, and yes, of course one of them will have a physical keyboard. I mean, could they be anymore BlackBerry?

The other phone will have a full touchscreen, and both phones will be powered by Android, just like the Priv. Speaking of the Priv, CEO John Chen now admits the phone was a misstep, saying that the $700 price tag was too steep, especially for their first Android phone. He’s absolutely right. That’s an intimidating price for any phone, and BlackBerry hadn’t yet proven themselves with an Android handset.

The two new phones – rumored to be the Rome and the Hamburg – will aim for a mid-level price point, likely less than $500 off-contract. Despite the Priv’s lackluster sales, it received a fairly warm reception, so hopefully that good word-of-mouth will translate to financial success for these two new devices. BlackBerry needs a win and soon if they’re going to stay in the hardware business.
