Did you like the idea of the giant 12.9-inch iPad Pro announced last fall, but you weren’t in love with its gargantuan size? It looks like Apple has heard your pleas, because at a special Apple event set to take place on March 15, the company could be taking the wraps off a smaller 9.7-inch iPad Pro.

“But wait… isn’t the 9.7-inch size reserved for the iPad Air family?”

Generally yes. For the past while, we’ve had the 7.9-inch size for the iPad mini and the 9.7-inch screen for the iPad Air. Since the iPad Air 2 has been out for over a year now, the assumption was that Apple would follow up with an iPad Air 3.

They kinda are, except it’s going to be marketed as a 9.7-inch iPad Pro instead. What this means is that you get an Air-sized iPad, but with support for the Apple Pencil, as well as a smaller version of the Smart Keyboard to suit the smaller iPad Pro. It’ll also get the A9X processor and quad stereo speakers.

The good news is that while there won’t be an iPad Air 3, this “smaller” iPad Pro will get pricing that more closely aligns with the existing iPad Air family. This also means that the first-gen iPad Air and the iPad mini 2 will slowly get phased out. Now would probably be a good time to go hunting through the Apple refurb store for deals.

Along with the new iPad Pro, the March 15 Apple Event should also see the unveiling of some new Apple Watch bands and the oft-rumored 4-inch iPhone 5se. Shipments could commence as early as three days after that.
