For a long time, Amazon has been able to avoid charging sales tax in California due to not having an actual warehouse in the state itself. However, new legislation passed in the state will force Amazon to change its ways and the company will begin charging sales tax tomorrow, September 15th. Similar things have happened in Texas and New Jersey.

Amazon tried to get California to push back to the tax enforcement to 2014 by offering to bring thousands of jobs to the state, but lawmakers shot the idea down. Despite that, Amazon still plans to build distribution centers in California that will bring in 10,000 full-time and 25,000 seasonal jobs by 2016. Somebody, get to work creating a “good guy Amazon” meme.

Distribution centers in California will of course lead to decreased shipping times, which is definitely an effective silver lining for us Californians. Will it be enough to make up for the tax? Probably not, but it’s something.
