As most of you undoubtedly know, October was breast cancer awareness month. All cancers are, of course, evil things that with any luck at all science will be able to find a way to cure and prevent sooner rather than later. It is hard to find anyone who doesn’t have a family member, friend, or co-worker who has not been diagnosed with it, which makes it all the more insidious. OgilvyOne Athens has designed a bra that combines the hi-tech world with the world of undergarments as a means of reminding women to perform self-exams and also make appointments with their doctors for exams and mammograms.
The way this works is there is a mechanism hidden within the hooks of the bra. Every time it is unhooked, it sends a signal to your phone. The phone sends a notification to the server, which then sends a tweet reminder to perform a self-examination. It is important to note that since OgilvyOne Athens is a Greek company, the tweets are all in Greek. But even in a language you probably don’t read, simply getting the tweet reminder to check your breasts on a regular basis for lumps should bring it to the front of your mind.
Now that I’ve gotten the medical, professional part out of the way…Y’all are thinking the same thing I am, aren’t you? I’m thinking if I had a daughter who was of dating age I would buy her enough of these that she could wear one every day of the week. And you can surely bet I’d be watching that Twitter account like a hawk. Because while the company intends this to tweet when a woman unhooks her own bra, it would obviously work if someone else was unhooking it for her. It’s just a thought.
Here’s the thing: You can’t actually buy one of these, at least not yet. The whole thing was to draw attention to the importance of self breast examinations. Maria Mpacodimou, a famous Greek TV personality, wore it for two weeks. Every time she unhooked it, a tweet would go out. I had never heard of her before this, but I love that she was willing to do it. Breast cancer is a horrible thing.
