How’s that for an odd twist of fate? You probably don’t know Paul Marcarelli, but you will recognize his face. For years, he was known as the “Can you hear me now?” guy with Verizon Wireless, bandying his way across the country to “demonstrate” the vast network coverage of Big Red. Now, he’s pimping out Old Yellow, likely for a lot of Green.

He’s the star in what appears to be a new series of commercials from Sprint, largely taking his old Verizon “character” and getting “him” to make the big switch over to Sprint. The first spot is called “Paul Switched” and he makes the argument that since “it’s 2016 now,” the old kind of coverage comparison is no longer applicable.

“Every network is great,” he says, pointing out that Sprint is within one percent of Verizon’s network reliability. It’s not quite as good, but it’s good enough. And the rates are cheaper. In “Direct to You with Paul,” he sits down with a Sprint traveling salesperson and activates his new phone, showing how quick and easy it is.

This doesn’t really change how people might feel about AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile or Sprint, I’d imagine. But taking the “character” of Paul and getting him to make the switch is on a whole other level of meta.
