Sponsored Post: Dare to Dream, Make the Future Michael Kwan December 1, 2014 Any entry in the Star Trek universe can be seen as a glimpse into the future, as many of these “science fiction” technologies have already been developed, are in their relative infancy, or may be invented at some point in the future. The communicator is like a cellphone. Those touchscreen-enabled handheld computers sure look a lot like tablets. And characters like TNG’s Data are slowly becoming closer to a reality thanks to advances in artificial intelligence. Some people may view science fiction movies as nothing more than harmless distractions, but we all know that they’re much more than that. They give us the hope that even when we let our imaginations run wild, even when we come up with ideas that don’t seem viable, we can still see them through and work toward building them for our future. The Oculus Rift could be a precursor to the holodeck. And aside from all the cool gadgets and gizmos that these future folk get to enjoy, aside from a society that has seemingly evolved beyond the need for money, they’ve come up with a way to power those starships for what appears to be an indeterminate amount of time, all without the need to ever refuel. The so-called energy crisis is the biggest challenge of this generation and it’s one that will continue to affect future generations for years to come. Can you help Shell outsmart tomorrow’s energy challenges today? Will you come up with the groundbreaking idea? Follow the conversation with the hashtag #makethefuture and dare to change the world.
