As if you weren’t already convinced, the Internet of Things is serious business in the realm of home technology, and now Samsung is the latest to discuss the concept while unveiling new home and kitchen appliances at CES 2015.

The Samsung Flex Duo Oven Range with Dual Door brings induction heat into your kitchen in a practical manner.

The Slide-In Induction Range with Virtual Flam Technology uses LED lights embedded beneath the glass cooktop to cast a “flame-like” glow on your pots and pans while you use it. It may sound silly, but I’m sure there are plenty out there who will appreciate the mood it sets. Cooking is an art, and an artist’s mood is key!

The Counter Depth T9000 Refrigerator is a slim, sleek, modern fridge that fits in with any kitchen theme.

The Internet of Things needs openness and industry collaboration
to succeed, says Samsung Electronics CEO BK Yoon

Samsung outlines its Internet of Things roadmap, as Mr. Yoon opens
2015 CES with a keynote on IoT’s infinite possibilities

The President and CEO of Samsung Electronics, BK Yoon, delivered the opening keynote speech at the 2015 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), calling for greater openness and collaboration across industries to unlock the infinite possibilities of the Internet of Things (IoT).

“The Internet of Things has the potential to transform our society, economy and how we live our lives,” said Mr. Yoon. “It is our job to pull together — as an industry, and across different sectors — to make true on the promise of the Internet of Things.”

Mr. Yoon also emphasized that IoT must center on people and fit into their lifestyles, adding, “The Internet of Things is not about ‘things.’ Instead, it is about people. Each person is at the center of their own technology universe, and the IoT universe will constantly adapt and change shape as people move through their world.”

As part of Samsung’s commitment to realizing the IoT era, Mr. Yoon announced a timetable for making Samsung technology IoT-enabled. By 2017, all Samsung televisions will be IoT devices, and in five years all Samsung hardware will be IoT-ready, further accelerating the expansion of IoT devices available in the market.

He also emphasized the importance of developers in building IoT and announced that Samsung will invest more than USD 100 million in its developer community in 2015.

Expanding IoT Devices and Components

In the IoT era, sensors become even more advanced and precise, and key components become ever more compact and highly energy efficient.

Mr. Yoon described Samsung’s advanced sensors, which are precise enough to understand a person’s surrounding environment and offer the right solution or service. For example, Samsung is developing a new three-dimensional range sensor that can detect the tiniest movements.

The company is also working on chips, such as the embedded package on package (ePOP) and the Bio-Processor, which are energy-efficient and compact enough to go into a wide range of devices, especially wearables and mobile devices.

“Expanding the devices in the IoT ecosystem and the components that power them is the first step in fulfilling the promise of the Internet of Things,” said Mr. Yoon. “Samsung already has a broad range of IoT devices. Last year, Samsung delivered more than 665 million products, and this number is set to increase. We have already begun to unlock the value hidden in connected devices and all the everyday objects around us.”

Creating an Open Ecosystem

In addition to IoT devices and components, Mr. Yoon emphasized the importance of openness in bringing IoT to life. Joining Mr. Yoon on stage, SmartThings CEO Alex Hawkinson underscored Samsung’s vision for an open infrastructure.

“For the Internet of Things to be a success, it has to be open,” said Hawkinson. “Any device, from any platform, must be able to connect and communicate with one another. We’ve worked hard to accomplish this, and are committed to putting users first, giving them the most choice and freedom possible. The SmartThings ecosystem is now compatible with more devices than any other platform.”

Supporting the Developer Community

Samsung deeply values the role of developers and their contributions, and firmly believe that developers will play a key role in realizing the IoT era

“We at Samsung are committed to supporting the developer community,” said Mr. Yoon. “Only together can we shape this better future.”

As part of this commitment, Mr. Yoon announced that Samsung would invest more than USD 100 million to support its developer community in 2015 by strengthening its accelerator programs and further expanding its international developer events.

Collaborating Across Industries

Samsung believes that IoT will have far-reaching impact, much more so than the consumer electronics industry has so far, as it will touch every aspect of people’s lives and revolutionize every industry. For IoT to succeed, companies across all industries will have to collaborate to build the necessary infrastructure and develop the many tailored IoT services that can meet the needs of consumers.

“I know in my heart that neither one single company nor one industry alone can deliver the benefits of the Internet of Things,” said Mr. Yoon. “To create this IoT universe, we have to see the potential of the Internet of Things across all kinds of industries. Only if we work together can we improve people’s lives.”

Samsung Brings a New Level of Engagement and Innovation to Kitchen Appliances at 2015 CES

New Products, Content and Services Reflect Home Cooks’ Growing Desire to Connect with Authentic Culinary Experiences

Samsung Electronics, a global home appliance innovator, today announced new home appliance products and experiences that inspire, educate and give consumers the tools they need to significantly up their cooking game. Innovations in the kitchen combine with new ways of connecting with some of the world’s most celebrated chefs to transform meal preparation into a true culinary experience. Samsung’s line of products – including a new dual door version of one of its most popular ovens, a kitchen range that finally makes induction heat a practical addition to any kitchen and a counter-depth refrigerator which makes breakthrough performance and design widely accessible – are on display at the 2015 International CES from Jan. 6-9, 2015.

“Consumers are more passionate about their homes than ever before. And that’s particularly true in the kitchen, where appliances are not just tools for meal preparation, but outlets to explore their culinary creativity and make a design statement,” said John Herrington, Senior Vice President, General Manager of Home Appliances, Samsung Electronics America. “With home cooks craving fresh ideas and inspiration, this year we are not only delivering incredible new product innovations, but forging ways to connect with chef-created content to make cooking more enjoyable and meaningful.”

New Ways of Connecting with Samsung Chef Collection

In 2013, Samsung launched Club des Chefs, a first-of-its-kind global culinary initiative that brought together world class chefs to collaborate with Samsung on the development of next-generation products. The result was the Samsung Chef Collection, a suite of beautifully designed professional chef-level appliances that has re-defined performance and design in the kitchen.

The connection between chef insights, products and consumers has proven so strong that Samsung is taking a holistic look at the cooking process and has introduced new content and services to make Club des Chefs and the Samsung Chef Collection truly immersive at-home culinary experiences. The Chef Collection App is an online tablet publication that includes original home cooking content from Samsung MSCA (Media Solutions Center America), recipes from partners like BigOven, Bon Appétit, Chefs Feed, Saveur, and the Culinary Institute of America, and tips from the chefs themselves. Updated bi-weekly, the app also features tutorial videos that showcase the Chef Collection suite of appliances to inspire consumers to explore its differentiated features. It’s like having your own personal culinary advisor at your fingertips, whether you’re cooking an everyday meal or preparing for a special holiday or occasion. The app will be available for download in Spring 2015.

For a limited time, consumers who purchase a Chef Collection appliance package are eligible to receive an exclusive Chef Collection tablet, with pre-installed app. The tablet also comes with a custom butcher block and engraved tablet stand.

In addition, Samsung recently launched the Samsung Culinary Class at FERRANDI, the leading professional culinary school in Paris, France. Consumers are now able to work side-by-side with some of the most accomplished professional chefs in the world and see first-hand how chef insights are applied to next-generation Samsung products. FERRANDI is serving as a pilot program for expansion to consumer engagements throughout the world.

Heating up the Cooking Category

Last year marked an exciting one for Samsung’s cooking category, from successfully transitioning the entire freestanding gas line-up to a more premium design to offering clever advancements like Clean View Door, which offers the largest viewing window space of any major brand in its class. In 2015, Samsung will transition its electric range line to match the new premium design reflected in the gas category.

Cooking flexibility remains an area of interest for consumers, and Samsung addresses this head-on. This year, Samsung will evolve its popular Flex DuoTM Oven Range with the introduction of Dual Door™. Just like the Samsung Flex Duo™ range, it gives consumers the ability to simultaneously cook two different dishes in two separate compartments at different temperatures with little transfer of aroma and taste, all behind the streamlined look of one solid oven door. Samsung takes convenience and flexibility to a whole another level with two doors that have been integrated into one to provide three cooking configurations to tackle any meal demand. An upper door gives access to a small top compartment (which, according to Samsung research, 92 percent of Flex Duo users prefer); a full door opens to both the top and bottom compartments when the removable Smart Divider is in use, and offers access to the entire oven when the divider is not in use. The capacity of a full size oven with the flexibility to customize based on meal prep needs – it’s the best of both worlds.

The Samsung Flex DuoTM Oven Range with Dual DoorTM will be available in Spring 2015.

Precision in Induction

Induction heating has become an increasingly popular option around the globe and while it has a superior ability to effectively transfer heat from the cooktop to cookware, it lacks the visual cues signaling the level of heat. The Samsung Chef Collection Slide-In Induction Range with Virtual Flame TechnologyTM not only delivers the full benefits of induction cooking, but takes it a step further.

A CES Innovation Awards honoree, the induction range features LED lighting embedded beneath a glass cooktop to cast a reassuring flame-like glow onto pots and pans when in use. The intensity of the virtual flame increases as you turn up the power, with nine levels of heat ranging from simmer to boil.

On top of the power and precision of a 4-burner induction cooktop, the Samsung Chef Collection Slide-In Induction Range includes award-winning features like Flex Duo™ Technology. Wrapped in a sleek stainless exterior with thoughtfully-designed controls, the range is ready to slide into any home kitchen décor to create a seamless and professional look. The Samsung Chef Collection Slide-In Induction Range is available now.

Breakthrough Refrigerator Performance and Design in a Counter Depth Model

Since its introduction last year, the T9000 Refrigerator has quickly joined a long line of innovative Samsung refrigerators which have transformed food storage in the kitchen. And, its perfectly calibrated balance of technology, performance and design has catapulted the T9000 to the top of the category.

The new counter depth version of the T9000 makes it accessible to a much larger segment of the consumer market. Its slim design easily fits into standard kitchen cabinets, so it delivers a more harmonized look and feel for today’s modern kitchens. The 23 cu. ft. refrigerator features Triple Cooling System technology, which creates three separate airflows in the refrigerator and freezer, enabling optimal humidity and individual temperature control per each compartment for outstanding freshness.

Triple Cooling also enables the T9000 to feature the Cool Select Plus, a fridge-in-freezer compartment located in the lower right part which can be converted from a refrigerator to a freezer and back again, and serves a multitude of needs. The Cool Select Plus features 4.43 cu. ft. of fresh-food storage and includes four customizable temperature settings: Fridge (41 F), Chilled (30 F), Soft Freeze (23 F), and Frozen (-9 to 1 F).

Additionally, the interior includes such features as slide in/flip up shelves and two crisper drawers. The counter depth T9000 will be available in Spring 2015.

New Options in Food Storage Innovation

With innovative and smart storage solutions, the Samsung Food Showcase refrigerator line-up – introduced last year – has quickly become a hit with busy families searching for ways to get a leg up on organization in the kitchen. The exterior door ShowCase compartments, divided into three family-friendly zones, and interior InnerCase compartments, perfect for storing larger, fresh food items, have proven to be the ideal combination of intuitive functionality, convenience and design. Now Samsung is adding new counter depth side by side and entry level models to the already robust line, insuring a wide breadth of options for all kitchen configurations and price points.

All Food Showcase refrigerator models feature a Metal Cooling guard on the inside of the front door to capture cold air and maintain the optimal temperature within the fridge, so food stays fresh, even if the refrigerator door is opened frequently. The refrigerators also feature elegant metal doors that add a premium feel to the modern lifestyle of families.

The new Samsung Food ShowCase refrigerator models are rolling out now, in addition to the already available side-by-side, four-door and three-door French Door models.

Bingo HOME: Race to Earth is a gaming title for the new DreamWorks Animation movie HOME and features progressive bingo that includes casual, shared gaming on the TV and smart devices already found in the home. The technology is a new innovative eco-system pioneered by Samsung and Yahoo for multi-screen interaction in the living room.
Samsung’s own Milk Video curates the most popular and interesting video clips from websites to give users access to premium content from a growing list of almost 50 content partners. To help users discover even more fun content, Samsung’s On TV feature helps users discover new content easily with intuitive recommendations.

More Choices than Ever Before

Samsung’s platform powered by Tizen allows Samsung Smart TVs to become part of a much larger content ecosystem, and allows easy collaboration with diverse partners for ultimate flexibility and unparalleled access.
