Most phones have some sort of notification LED on the front to let you know when you’ve got an email or a Facebook message waiting for you. Some even let you customize the color of the light to designate different types of notifications. But what if you prefer to keep your phone face down on the table? The new Samsung Smart Glow tech appears to be the answer.

Set to debut on the Galaxy J2, Smart Glow is an LED light ring that surrounds the camera on the back of your phone. Just like the notification light on the front of your phone, the Smart Glow ring will illuminate when it has something to tell you. This is similar, in some ways, to the “Edge” lighting found on the Galaxy S6 edge and Galaxy S7 edge, except it’s around the camera.

For the time being, Smart Glow supports three types of notifications. “Priority alerts” are probably what would appear on your lock screen (and notification shade). You can assign colors to different contacts. “Usage alerts” let you about the status of your phone, like low battery. “Selfie assist” is the most unique, illuminating blue when the camera detects a face. It then snaps a pic two seconds later.

More functions will likely be added over time, getting introduced in future models like the Galaxy S8 and the Tizen-powered Z2. You could get a weather ring and a health ring, for example. Another possibility is an expansion of the selfie assist so that only parts of the ring are illuminated. This can help you center your shot. In the interim, Smart Glow will be available exclusively on the India-only Galaxy J2.
