The smart speaker market is heating up. Amazon already has several versions of its Echo smart speaker available to buy, and Google has their Google Home speaker (and possibly a smaller version to compete with the Echo Dot). Now DJ Koh, president of Samsung’s mobile division, has confirmed Samsung’s intention to get into the smart speaker game.

We don’t have a specific timeline, but Koh said that the device will launch “soon.” whatever that may mean. Koh says he wants to great a “fruitful user experience at home” using Samsung devices and that he wants to move “heavily” on it.

Bixby will more than likely be the assistant powering the speaker, seeing as he he’s already wormed his way into the company’s smart refrigerators and Samsung plans to feature him in TVs and wearables as well. Unfortunately the general consensus is that Bixby is (so far) a pale imitation of Alexa and Siri, so Samsung has some catching up to do if they have any hopes of competing in this market.
