Is this how the robot apocalypse starts? Have I been so busy looking for terminators and the ED-209 from Robocop that I’m not even noticing the subtle takeover that’s happening right underneath our noses? This robot hand from the Ishikawa Oku Lab from the University of Tokyo has been designed to play rock, paper, scissors. While that on its own isn’t very impressive, the fact that the robot beats its human opponents 100% of the time certainly is.

Before you give that robot a hearty congratulations, you should know that this impressive track record is the result of consistent cheating. Robots don’t have morals like we do, so there’s nothing stopping this high-speed robot hand from using its high-speed vision system to recognize if you choose rock, paper, or scissors or then quickly busting out the winning move.
