It’s funny how wireless carriers choose to operate, really. On the one hand, they all end up congregating around the same or similar promos for double data and monthly plans. On the other hand, they work to differentiate themselves from the competition. Well, one thing that has set Fido apart from other Canadian providers is the FidoDOLLARS program. That ended and if you’ve still got doggy bucks, you’d better spend them today.

We’ve known about Fido killing off the FidoREWARDS program since last year. That was when they stopped giving out the fictitious cash with monthly plans, replacing them with “free” subscriptions to Spotify and Daily Vice. For those of us who were still on legacy plans, we continued to accumulate FidoDOLLARS that could then be spent on travel packs, hardware upgrades and the like.

At this point, the expiration basically depends on what plan you had as of April 6 this year. Fido breaks it down like this:

  1. FidoREWARDS members, if subscribed to a monthly plan as of April 6, 2016, will no longer earn dollar rewards—and be able to redeem dollars until July 6, 2016.
  2. For those on Fido plans that do not earn FidoDOLLARS, but have a balance, they will have until July 6, 2016 to redeem these dollars.
  3. If on April 6, 2016, you’re on a term agreement that earns FidoDOLLARS, “you’ll no longer earn FidoDOLLARS as of the end of your current term,” and will be able to redeem these rewards until July 6, 2018.
  4. Customers with multiple lines: Fido says “If on April 6, 2016, you have multiple lines that earn FidoDOLLARS and at least one of them is subscribed to a plan on a term agreement, each line will stop earning as set out above, however you’ll be able to redeem your accumulated FidoDOLLARS balance under the program until July 6, 2018.

The TL;DR version is that if you have one of the older plans and you’re still on contract, then you’ve got a couple more years to spend those puppy moolah. If you are not currently in a contract with a plan that earns FidoDOLLARS, you’d best redeem those bucks for something today or else they’ll just disappear into the ether.

Because after tomorrow, your FidoDOLLARS are going the way of Bison Dollars and Disney Dollars… except you won’t have some paper-based novelty to show for it.
