We now have a better idea of what Nintendo has coming down the pipe thanks to a new patent filing for a gamepad that uses touchscreen technology. And not just a small touchscreen in the center of the controller, but a touchscreen big enough to encompass the entire peripheral.

There will be analog sticks and shoulder buttons, but the face buttons will be digital. It sounds like it will feel like playing games on a smartphone or a tablet, with a few analog buttons thrown in for good measure. This seems to partially support the rumors that Nintendo was looking to create free-form displays and that they might go for something more mobile.

We don’t yet know if this will be a standalone device or a controller for a console, but if it’s the latter it looks like it probably be able to operate on its own just like the Wii-U controller. Needless to say, we’ll keep you updated on the rumored Nintendo NX as more details surface.
