New Alexa-Enabled Sonos Playbar Coming with HDMI Michael Kwan April 30, 2018 News I love the Sonos sound system we have set up in our house. It’s great for streaming music, watching movies, listening to podcasts and more. But we also have to recognize that it’s been five years since we got to check out the Sonos Playbar here at MEGATechNews. And a lot has changed in five years. So, in an effort to stay up with the times, it looks like Sonos has got a new speaker coming with two very important updates. Based on the patent filing with the FCC, it looks like a new Sonos smart speaker is in the works. The filing for the label, shown above, looks a lot like the on-device interface that we see on the Sonos One smart speaker, complete with that microphone icon at the top. That’s because the Sonos One features far-field microphones like an Amazon Echo, granting users access to the Alexa voice assistant. We already knew at the time that this would only be the beginning for a new wave of smart speakers from Sonos, and this new FCC filing seems to deliver on that promise. German website iFun believes that the upcoming device will be an updated Sonos Playbar. That’s the smart soundbar that you’d pair up with the television in your living room. The existing model connects via optical audio, but this upcoming version — referenced as model number S14 — seems to support HDMI. This one of these “about time” scenarios. But then when you look at the filing for the label, it seems to show a device that is far more square in shape. That looks more like the Sonos Playbase than it does a soundbar like the Playbar, but maybe they’re doing both at the same time? I guess we’ll find eventually, assuming this FCC filing manifests itself as a real product at some point. Share This With The World!
