I may not be particularly good at them, but I’ve been a huge fan of the fighting game genre ever since Street Fighter II back in the early 1990s. I dug into Virtua Fighter, Dead or Alive, Tekken, Killer Instinct and even Clay Fighter, but one of the biggest rivals to Street Fighter had to be Mortal Kombat with its “realistic” graphics and over-the-top gore. As we anxiously await the arrival of Mortal Kombat X on consoles, we’ve learned that a mobile version is also in the works. And it will be free to play.

Naturally, this comes with a couple of pretty huge caveats. For starters, don’t expect to have a traditional fighting game experience on your iOS or Android device of choice. You won’t be mashing your way through special moves, intricately comboing your way to victory with cross-ups, mix-ups and zoning. Instead, the mobile version of Mortal Kombat X will take on the same “card fighter” mechanic that we saw in the mobile version of Injustice: Gods Among Us.

What this likely also means is that the monetization model will work in much the same way. Sure, Mortal Kombat X will technically be a free-to-play title, but in actuality, it’s more of a freemium experience. You can earn the kharacter kards (I both hope they do and don’t use that spelling) for your kombat or you can simply purchase them with some in-game currency… which you’d purchase with real currency. No, it won’t be quite as fun as the “full” Mortal Kombat X game, but this is a pretty fun way to tear off some heads and dismember some kombatants on the go.
