Those who were excited about Nintendo’s foray into the world of mobile gaming were no doubt a little disappointed to learn that the company’s first app – Miitomo – would be a social networking app as opposed to a traditional game. That certainly doesn’t mean Miitomo isn’t worth your time, however.

The app is now available in Japan for both iOS and Android and initial impression is that, while far from flawless, Miitomo is very true to the Nintendo brand. Nobody expects it to actually become a contender in the social networking sphere, but it’s a fun little distraction that employs the Nintendo quirk well. Like any social network, how much you get out of it ultimately depends on how many people you’re willing to add and interact with.

Miitomo should launch in the States before the month is up, but based on these reactions it sounds like a pretty successful test launch for Nintendo. They obviously understand that what makes them unique and they didn’t shy away. That’s the key, here. There are a lot of rival developers, especially now that they’re operating in the mobile realm, but there’s only one Nintendo.
