Hot on the heels of Yahoo winning a court case that allows them to disclose PRISM details, Microsoft General Counsel Brad Smith has sent a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder asking for the same privilege, so Microsoft can prove once and for all that they haven’t been giving special access to the NSA.

The press hasn’t been kind to Microsoft in the aftermath of the PRISM reveal, accusing the company of either giving the government the means to break into encrypted files or simply handing over the encryption keys outright. Microsoft has denied all of these claims, but a gag order related to the NSA leaves them unable to divulge specifics.

Yahoo’s victory should certainly give Microsoft hope in their endeavor, though Yahoo won a court case while Microsoft is appealing to the Attorney General directly. Hopefully Holder will see Yahoo’s win as a reason to comply and not drag this out.
