MEGATech Showcase: Kitchen Gadgets for Geeks

By now you probably know that one of my hobbies is cooking. Not that I am anything like what you’d call a chef, but I enjoy cooking at home, creating new recipes, and in general just enjoy good food. Since I’ve been living with my mother, most of the kitchen gadgets I use daily are what have been in the house since I was a kid, but I have bought quite a few new ones. There are several in this showcase that are definitely on my Christmas list, so I’m hoping at least a couple of them show up under the tree this year.

First up, R2-D2 measuring cups! When stacked together, they form everyone’s favourite droid. Taken apart, they give you measuring cups ranging from 1/4 to 1 cup, as well as measuring spoons ranging from 1/4 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon. But wait, there’s more! No geek kitchen can be complete without an R2-D2 kitchen timer, am I right? This one measures 4? x 5? x 2.25? and can be set for times up to 60 minutes by turning his head. His feet have rubber pads so he won’t slip or scrape your countertops, and he doesn’t require any batteries. Instead, you just wind his head all the way to 60, then set the time you need. When your time is up, an alarm bell will sound for five seconds. This one can be yours for $19.99 US.

OK, so you’ve got your measuring cups, your salt and pepper shakers, and your timer… now you need a knife block, and this one more than fills the bill. You don’t just get a set of five stainless steel knives – when they’re in their holder they form an X-Wing Fighter. The stand is plastic with chrome effects, and the whole thing is washable. Knives included are: cook’s knife, bread knife, carving knife, utility knife, and paring knife. These just became available last month at a cost of £69.99 or $118.00 US.

I had no idea people actually used egg cups any more, but given this nifty little R2-D2-shaped egg cup I can’t see why you wouldn’t want to. Even if you don’t eat hard boiled eggs, really. Just pop the dome off and an egg nestles securely in his body for your breakfasting pleasure. Add one to your collection for $19.95 US.

Enough with the Star Wars already, huh? OK, I can do that. Here we have a set of sonic screwdriver cutlery for all the Dr. Who fans out there. In addition to the knife, fork, and spoon ($29.99 US), there are several other utensils available (pizza cutter, vegetable peeler, and scrub brush). Just be careful where you point those things, you never know what could happen.

Now here’s something you don’t see every day. A mini cake pan shaped like a D20! It makes four cakes at a time, each measuring three inches across. You can use pretty much any cake recipe (or box mix), but they recommend using something with yeast to ensure your cake rises to conform to the shape better. They are microwave, oven, dishwasher, and freezer safe, made of food-grade silicone. At just $12.99 US, you should probably pick up more than one. Who only wants four little cakes at a time?

So you’ve got a recipe on your iPad you want to use in the kitchen. You can either lay your tablet down on the counter and hope you don’t spill on it or prop it up somehow and hope it doesn’t fall. Or, you can kill two birds with one stone and get this iPad paper towel holder.
