MEGATech Showcase: Flashy Flash Drives

My collection of bookmarks has grown into a big enough file that it’s time for another Showcase! As I’m sure you know by now, I love flash drives. The goofier they look, the better, at least for me. Not only do I abhor anything plain and boring, I also have an inability to remember which drive holds which files, so I end up wasting a ton of time plugging them in to see what files they contain if they’re all the same. My personal collection continues to grow, although my favourites are still the Slave Leia and Jedi Luke from Mimoco.

First up in today’s collection is Serenity! This is a die cast metal replica of the ship from Firefly, and it would be pretty darn awesome even if it didn’t light up when you plug it in. But it does light up! When you push the button on top, an 8GB USB flash drive appears, and the engine lights actually do light up when it’s in use. Pretty sure I’ve featured this one or at least one like it before, but whatever. Who wouldn’t want a USB flash drive embedded in a wine cork? I wouldn’t necessarily recommend actually using it in a bottle of wine, but if you’re a wine drinker this would make a neat addition to your collection. Also, if you’re a wine drinker who also collects corks, this would be a fabulous place to hide your data in plain sight! Just toss it in with the rest of them. These are not only unique, their purchase goes toward a very good cause! Each of these Timber flash drives is made from tree branches damaged when that huge ice storm hit Slovenia. Not only does that make each one absolutely one of a kind, but the proceeds will go to benefit the Scout Association of Slovenia’s “Let’s Restore Slovenian Forests” project. Not only can you wear this one as part of your business attire, you can use it to easily transfer files between your smartphone and your computer. Well, assuming you have an Android phone, of course. iPhone users need not apply. This Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. flash drive holds 16GB of data, and has both a USB and an Android OTG connector. It measures 1.3″(L) x 1.3″(W) x 0.3″(H), and weighs just over 3 ounces. It’s currently out of stock, however, so I’m not sure exactly how much it’ll cost when there are more available.

Not only are these flash drives in the shape of some of your favourite treats (Creamsicle as shown here, also Jelly Donut and Cola), but they smell like them, too! I’m not sure it’s a good idea for me to have a flash drive sitting around that smells like a creamsicle because I already eat way too many of them, but I’m willing to try it to see how well my willpower stands up to the constant bombardment of deliciousness. Dragon egg, anyone? This flash drive is of course inspired by Game of Thrones, and you don’t have to marry Daenerys Targaryn to get one. Each egg holds 8GB of data, and they are waterproof. It is important to note that they are not, in fact, fireproof, and if you try to hatch a dragon child from one all you’ll do is melt it and ruin it. Each one costs $30.00 US, and has a pull-out O-ring so you can attach it to whatever you’d like.

I keep meaning to buy one of these, but I never remember when I’m placing an Amazon order. This wrench drive is made of metal, and there’s a note that you can’t actually use it as a real wrench. Darn the luck… I carry an adjustable wrench at all times when I’m working. Anyway, it holds 8Gb of data, measures 8.5 x 1.7 x 0.7cm, and costs just under $6.00 US.

With all the data breaches happening lately, wouldn’t it be nice to know your data was absolutely secure? The Cryptex aims to please. It uses a combination lock of rotating rings with five digits which keep the flash drive itself from untrustworthy hands. The drive itself is made of metal and bonded leather, and it even has a secret compartment where you can leave yourself a note if you need to. It doesn’t come cheap, though… The Cryptex holds 16GB of data, and costs $48.00 US.

Maybe having a goofy-shaped flash drive isn’t your thing. Maybe you want to be subtle about what you’re carrying. Maybe you’re not like me and wouldn’t lose this inside of a day. This itty bitty teeny tiny flash drive (0.63 inches by 0.94 inches) holds a whopping 64GB of data. Not only that, but it’s USB 3.0! What’s nice about the tiny flash drives is you can leave them in even your laptop without worrying they’ll break or get bent or damage the USB port. Finally, we have a flash drive after my own heart. It’s not that I can’t hook a cable up to connect my phone to my laptop so I can transfer files, it’s that sometimes I don’t have one with me for some reason. So I got a flash drive that has both a micro USB and regular USB connector. But depending on the case on my phone, sometimes the micro USB connector doesn’t seat all the way, leaving me in the same boat I was before. This one has an extra-long micro USB connector, and I love SanDisk for thinking of it. I want one for ALL my gadgets that are supposed to connect to my phone! Get 64GB of data storage for $65.00 US.
