MegaTech Biz: China Unicom Upstages Tim Cook with Leak… D’oh! Michael Lim October 4, 2011 The Chinese are notoriously tight-lipped concerning state secrets, but that doesn’t appear to be the case with OPI (Other People’s Information). In a presentation given last Wednesday by China Unicom’s Deputy Director, Huang Wenliang, he inadvertently let the cat out out of the bag that the iPhone 5 will support their 21Mbps HSPA+ network. What?!? If true, no amount of backtracking will put this genie back in the bottle, and new Apple CEO Tim Cook will have to settle for second fiddle on October 4th having had his thunder stolen by those loose-lipped Chinese. This is good news for consumers, of course, if this information pans out. Other than China Unicom, AT&T, major Canadian carriers and a ragtag bunch of others across the world already support HSPA+ 3G. In realworld operating conditions, HSPA+ has shown itself to be very nearly the equal of 4G LTE data networks, and should allay somewhat Apple fanboy fears that their favorite fruit company is falling behind the data rate curve. Sometimes, you just gotta love these Homer Simpson-esque moments. Source: Electronista Share This With The World!
