When you think of the world of gaming, names like Nintendo and Capcom might come to mind. When you think about third-party gaming accessories, your attention might turn to the likes of Hori, Nyko or SteelSeries. If you’re anything like most people, you probably don’t associate fried chicken with your video game obsession… but that hasn’t stopped the creation of the KFC Gamer’s Box 2.0, a real deal mobile game “console” created by the Colonel himself.

Sort of. What you get with this exercise in eccentricity is a box for all that fried chicken you’re going to order but the box doubles as a Bluetooth game controller. There’s a dock on the top where you can lock your smartphone into place and then there are two halves to the game controller on either side of the box, not unlike the Joy-Con controllers you get with the Nintendo Switch, except they don’t seem to be detachable.

The two controller halves pair up with your smartphone via Bluetooth and then you can game to your heart’s delight. When you start getting hungry, you simply open the KFC Gamer’s Box and grab another piece of fried chicken before putting those greasy fingers back onto the controllers to rejoin the action.

The KFC Gamer’s Box 2.0 comes from a collaboration with Mountain Dew, obviously another name you automatically associate with the video game industry. Sadly (for gladly, depending on your perspective), only ten units are going to be available and they’re going to be given away as contest prizes in India. It doesn’t seem to stipulate that the winner has to come from India, so I guess you can enter too?

This follows a rather strange wave of fast food joints getting into the technology game. It was just earlier this month that KFC made a smartphone for China and then McDonald’s made a smartphone speaker out of a cardboard tray too. Weird. I’ll just wait for the Tim Hortons smartwatch and Burger King mesh Wi-Fi system.
