In the northern hemisphere, we are pretty much smack in the middle of summer. Which means there’s an ice cream shop open on practically every corner, and there isn’t a whole lot that tastes better on a hot summer day. Of course, some of us prefer to buy some to eat at home, while others prefer to make their own. But then you run into the problem of fitting the ice cream maker into your freezer. You also run into the fact that if you eat too much ice cream, you’re going to have to go out and buy bigger clothes.

The Ice Cream Ball kills two birds with one stone, as it were. It requires no electricity, you don’t have to put it in the freezer, and you get some exercise while you make your tasty treat. What more could you want?

The instructions are pretty simple…open the outer chamber and cram as much ice in there as you can fit, then add some rock salt and close the lid. Fill the inner chamber with your mixed ice cream ingredients, and close that lid. From there, you get to play. The more you shake and roll the ball, the faster the rock salt will melt the ice (which is what freezes the ice cream), and the creamier your ice cream will be. After ten minutes or so, open the inner chamber and scrape the sides, then close it up and toss it around for a little longer (about 30 minutes total with cream, 35 with half-and-half). After all that…presto change-o! Ice cream!

It even comes with a basic ice cream recipe, and from there it’s up to you what flavours and other additions you want to make. You get the Ice Cream Ball, the opener tool and an instruction sheet. The ball measures approximately 20cm in diameter. Depending on where you shop, you can pick one up for anywhere from 26.49 to $23.16 US. It comes in blue, green, orange, pink, purple, red, sage green and clear. Each time you use it, you’ll end up with about a quart of delicious finished product.
