Gamer and Modder Shows The True Meaning of Hardcore Michael Lim September 9, 2011 Extras Many of us gamers like to think of ourselves as hardcore. We all own multiple consoles from each generation, and we play all the hardcore, triple-A titles that come out every year as well as the exclusives that each console maker puts out. But still, that is not nearly as hardcore as modder and gamer timofiend. Timofiend combined his love of both the Xbox 360 and the PS3 and made a custom modded case that includes both consoles in a single metal enclosure. To achieve this, timofiend had to essentially gut the electronic innards of both consoles and then reconstruct them inside a specially modified case. To simplify construction and keep costs low, timofiend opted to use fans for cooling the chassis instead of more exotic solutions such as peltiers or liquid cooling kits. To ensure that the system doesn’t overheat, timofiend has included temperature sensors and two LCD readouts on the front of the case that shows the operating temperature of both the Xbox 360 and PS3 at all times. The case includes two sets of video outputs so both consolses are capable of being used at the same time. Timofiend’s Reddit page lit up like a Christmas tree the minute he posted the finished mod on his page. Unfortunately, the gamer turned modder has no intention of building these kits or providing pre-fabbed kits for others. However, he has stated that he kept careful notes of this project from start to finish and is willing to release build instructions to the public for anyone who wishes to construct their own. Conceivably, it would be possible to combine a Wii with either the Xbox 360 or PS3 to allow both the hardcore and the not so hardcore members of the same household to play at the same time. In fact, with a large enough case and proper consideration for cooling, it would be possible to combine all three current generation consoles into a single enclosure. Now how cool would that be?
