Facebook Releases Facebook Lite Mobile App in a Few Countries Dylan Duarte January 27, 2015 News I don’t use the Facebook mobile app for two reasons. The silly reason is that I’m afraid that in some woozy, discombobulated state (such as when I wake up in the middle of the night and screw around on my phone) I’m going to accidentally post something weird or report a friend’s post or make some other embarrassing mistake. I once accidentally called my stepfather at five in the morning because I was falling asleep and my thumb kept mashing the screen. The second reason is much, much more rational: it’s a resource hog. Now that I have a Galaxy Note I’d have no problem running the Facebook app, but back when I had my HTC Incredible, the app would slow it down from time to time. Facebook knows that their mobile application doesn’t provide the smoothest experience on older phones, which is why they’ve released Facebook Lite in a handful of developing markets. Bangladesh, Nepal, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, and Zimbabwe have all officially gotten the app, but if you’re handy with your phone at all, you can just download the APK yourself. While the traditional Facebook app is 27MB, fairly big for what it is, Facebook Lite is a mere 252KB, so you should be able to run it without issue no matter what smartphone you’re rockin’.
