End Warm Wine Woes With the ChillBall Beth Snyder July 11, 2011 Like many people, I enjoy a glass of wine in the evening. However, in summer, it becomes more of a hassle than it’s worth, because once it’s poured into my glass it immediately starts warming up. And few things are as disappointing as knowing what was a perfectly chilled Gewürztraminer not ten minutes ago is now a lukewarm puddle of grape pressings in my glass. I’ve got friends who are wine collectors, and they swear by these. Endorsement enough for me! You get six 1-1/2-inch chillballs, eight clips (four 4-inch and four 3-inch), and a case to store them in when you’re not using them. All parts are made of food-grade materials, and the balls contain a soft non-toxic gel. How they work is simple: just freeze the chillballs until you need to use them. Then take one and snap it into the specially-designed clip, and slide the clip over the rim of your glass so the ball nestles inside. It’ll keep your wine chilled without the bother (and watering-down effect) of using ice cubes. Sure, you could place other reusable ice cubes in your glass, but they bob around and bump up against your lips as you sip. ChillBall keeps the ice down near the bottom where it does the most good. ChillBall will work with most standard-shaped wine glasses of 6 to 12 ounces (200 to 350 ml) in capacity, including champagne flutes. It takes approximately four hours for the ChillBalls to completely freeze once defrosted… about the same amount of time it takes to make ice cubes. Of course, you don’t have to use them exclusively with wine; any glass with any liquid inside will do. The starter set of six (you’ll want more, I’m sure), sells for just $15.94 US, but unfortunately can only be shipped in the US or to US military addresses right now.
