Social game developer Zynga, who just took a major hit in their earnings, is being sued by Electronic Arts on behalf of its subsidiary Maxis. EA claims that Zynga, who has a reputation for copying games, has copied EA’s The Sims Social with their recent The Ville. Both games are undeniablely similar and EA says that to “an uninitiated observer,” the two games are “largely indistinguishable.” Of course, the General Manager of Maxis, Lucy Bradshaw, hasn’t been afraid to point out Zynga’s cloning history. She says that while smaller developers might not have the resources to go after Zynga, that isn’t a problem for them.

Now Zynga is firing back with similar claims. They defend The Ville as being the next step in their “Ville” franchise, but then they accuse Electronic Arts of copying their earlier title CityVille with EA’s SimCity Social. Ooh, drama! I don’t know how well that argument will hold up, given that SimCity as a franchise has been around for over two decades, but it’ll be interesting to see how this plays out.
