Click and Grow Your Way To Better Dinners Beth Snyder April 14, 2013 One of the things you may not know about me is that I am a fairly serious cook. I mean, sure, I’m not above opening a package of noodles and eating them for lunch, but as a rule my dinners are planned out and I’ve got around a hundred original recipes contributed on websites here and there. Nothing professional, yet something I enjoy doing and by all reports am pretty good at. One of the things I hate about winter is the lack of fresh herbs. Yeah, I can buy them at the grocery store, but they’re cost-prohibitive. So what I usually end up doing is drying or freezing the herbs from my garden every year in hopes they’ll last me through the winter. I’ve tried putting them in pots and moving them indoors, but I have a brown thumb when it comes to tending plants that actually need tending. Enter the Click and Grow. This is a smart herb garden that allows you to grow up to three of your favourite herbs at a time, and all you have to do is plug it into the wall and add water. Seriously…this thing was tailor-made for someone like me. Each herb is grown using prefilled cartridges, which use a nanotech material engineered to supply plant roots with the right amount of oxygen, water and nutrients at any time. No guessing, no fuss, no mess. I think that’s neat. The garden also uses a lighting system which uses only six watts of energy to bathe your plants in natural light when it’s needed without leaving them looking washed out and sickly. The technology of the lighting system means your overall electric bill should increase by only about five bucks a year. Each garden ordered comes with cartridges for basil, thyme and lemon balm, or you can order more than one to get additional plants such as mini tomato and salad rocket (arugula). Refill cartridges will also be available for chili pepper, mini tomato, peppermint, spinach, salad rocket and various kinds of lettuce. They’ve even said they’re working on strawberries! Each garden measures 11.8” length x 4.7” width x 11.4” max height (30 cm length x 12 cm width x 29 cm max height). Here’s the catch…if you want one, you’re going to have to pledge on Kickstarter. I wouldn’t worry about funding…as of right now, they are still almost a month away from their deadline and they have gotten over $350,000 in pledges toward their $75,000 goal. Pledges, as with all Kickstarter campaigns, start low at just $5.00 US. But the more you pledge, the more you get in return. You can pledge all the way up to $10,000 if you want, for which they will fly you to their labs, give you a personal tour, and hand you one of the first Click and Grow gardens off the line. The least amount you can pledge and still get a garden for yourself is $39.00 US. Source: 7 Gadgets Share This With The World!
