The Konami code has come a long way since it first appeared in the 1986 NES release of Gradius (though North American gamers undoubtedly know it for giving them 30 lives in Contra). It has transcended video game culture and become firmly rooted in general pop culture, to the point where it’s now being used to help celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation.

The Bank of Canada unveiled a new ten dollar bill and on that particular page of their official website, they’ve hidden an Easter egg that can be brought out with the Konami code. If you enter the code – up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, b, a – using your keyboard on the official website for the new bill, animated bills will rain down while the Canadian national anthem plays. It’s no thirty lives, but it’ll do.

It’s just another reminder that geeks rule the world. Canada is pretty cool, you guys.
