Android N’s Background Updates Won’t Work on Existing Phones Dylan Duarte May 20, 2016 News Yesterday I broke down a bunch of Android N’s best new features that couldn’t be found on iOS, and undoubtedly one of the most exciting was the ability to download system updates in the background where they won’t impede your smartphone use. Now we know that particular feature won’t be available on any existing phones. What this means is that if you upgrade to Android N on the phone you already have, you won’t get the background downloads feature. That feature will only be available on upcoming phones, phones that will in all likelihood ship with Android N. While there have been plenty of past Android upgrades that brought all of their features to older, upgrading phones, apparently this particular feature is a bit too complicated. That seems easy to believe considering the complexity of system updates. And yeah, it’s a bummer for those of us holding onto older phones, but don’t you want to upgrade anyway?
