Amazon’s Fire tablets haven’t been selling like the hot cakes the “fire” name would suggest, so in a bid to attract the buyers who have been waving off the $99 Fire HD 6, the company plans to release a budget tablet for exactly half the price.

The tablet will supposedly ship in time for the holiday season, alongside an 8-inch and a 10-inch tablet. The $50 tablet will likely have all of the shortcomings that budget tablets usually suffer from, but the question is whether or not folks will really care if they’re being asked to spend so little. For $50, you could get a device that can stream media as well as surf the Internet, which might be appealing to buyers with a very limited budget.

Funny enough, Amazon wanted to start selling a $50 Kindle as well, but the e-reader technology proved to be too pricey, so the cheapest Kindle remains $79. You can get thousands of hours of colorful streaming video for $50, but black text on a gray screen? No, that’s too expensive.
