It has finally arrived...the longest day of the year for the Northern hemisphere, and the shortest for the Southern hemisphere. Technically, the official start of summer, although in most places (certainly not all, if the reports of friends are true, and I have no reason to suspect they are not) it's been warm for weeks already. This is the time of A Midsummer Night's Dream, a time for celebrating times of fertility, a time to ward off evil, and an originally Pagan holiday co-opted by the Christians. Whatever it means to you, and even if it doesn't mean anything, to me this is both a wonderful and sad day. Wonderful because it is the beginning of my favourite season, and sad because from here on out the days get shorter as we count down toward a far-off winter.
