Samsung is set to start producing flexible displays this year, with a batch coming later this year and a second batch coming late 2013. The displays would allow devices to be fully folded or rolled up like a magazine, all while maintaining visibility. According to Samsung, they would also allowed for decreased power consumption, by cutting power when a display is bent a certain way.

My favorite thing about covering tech news is when I get to write about something that you would see in a science fiction film. Flexible displays could allow for so many cool transforming gadgets – just having a tablet that you could fold up and place in your pocket would be remarkable. All the really cool applications aside, a flexible display could probably take a serious beating, one that would crush a hard display to dust. I’m incredibly excited to see what ideas come out of this.
