On the road again…

That’s right. It felt like just yesterday we returned from CES in Las Vegas and it’s time for the team at MEGATechNews to take another trip. This time, we’re hopping on a ferry over to Vancouver Island for the sixth annual GottaCon Gaming Convention in Victoria, BC, running from February 28 to March 2.

In some ways, you could say that GottaCon is similar to a LANcouver or the BCITSA Video Game Party Night that we’ve previously attended and supported, but this looks to be even bigger. In addition the BYOC LAN, you’ll find sections for a bunch of exhbitors and dedicated space for tabletop and trading card games. But wait, there’s more.

Showing Off Some Techie Goodies

First off, we’ll be joining our friends at Futurelooks in the exhibitor area on the second floor of the Victoria Conference Centre. Our booth will actually be right smack in the middle of the exhibitor area with presenting sponsor NCIX and Kingston HyperX. Just as we’ve seen at previous events, Futurelooks will be showcasing some great computer gear for all the PC DIY enthusiasts out there.

Word on the street is that we will be joined by Mr. Bubble from InWin, some great PC tech from the folks at Gigabyte, and some cool demos of Creative Sound Blaster technology, giving attendees the chance to listen in on some great audio. I’m sure we’ll have lots more to show off there too, so be sure to come by and say hello.

The Discussion Panels

If you need a break away from all that LAN gaming, Warhammer-ing and RPG-ing, then you’ll want to attend some of the numerous discussion panels that will be taking place in two theatres at the GottaCon. There are two in particular that you should mark on your calendar and both of them will be on the Sunday.

First, we have the “Future of Gaming” panel at 10am in the main theatre. In this panel, we’ll discuss how gaming has changed, expanding beyond conventional consoles and PCs and onto smartphones, tablets, wearables and more, as well as innovative products like the Oculus Rift and gamification by way of apps like Foursquare and HabitRPG. Second, there is the “PC vs Console, Digital vs Physical, Cable vs Netflix” panel that’ll talk about all the different types of digital media in our lives and how they are affecting more traditional media.

The reason why you’ll want to highlight those two panels is I’m on both of them. That’s pretty sweet, eh? Some of the other discussion panels at GottaCon include Creating DIY Video Games, Everything You Wanted to Know About Building a PC (with Futurelooks Senior Hardware Editor Eric Garay), and Storytelling in Video Games.

See You in Victoria!

The sixth annual GottaCon gaming convention kicks off at 5pm on Friday, February 28 and runs until 6pm on Sunday, March 2 at the Victoria Conference Centre. From what I hear, there are still tickets available through GottaCon.com, so head on over there for more information and we’ll see you in Victoria.
