We met up with Mathieu Whelan to discuss some of these innovations. You might remember him from when we look at the Linksys E-Series routers last year. For speed freaks, the biggest update with the EA6500 is the introduction of 802.11ac, which is the next generation of Wi-Fi technology to follow the 802.11n standard. Using the 5GHz band (the EA6500 also supports 2.4GHz), you are able to get a wireless throughput of 1300Mbps. That’s crazy fast and, before you say that there aren’t any AC products out there to use it, Linksys has also introduced an AC hub to work with it.
But other companies can do AC too, so what is Linksys doing differently? They’ve got the Smart WiFi app that allows for fantastic remote control of your wireless router through your Android or iOS device, as well as several third-party applications that can further expand this functionality. From the app, which works with the Cisco Connect Cloud service, you have access to robust parental controls, guest networks, and more. Check out the video interview and then read the full press release below for more info.
The Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router EA6500 is available now for $219.99 and the accompanying AC Universal Media Connector (WUMV710) is $159.99.
