Labor Day is not just a day off for picnics and parties. It is the day we should all be remembering those in organized labour who gave their time, energy, money, and sometimes their lives in the effort to give all working people a better life. Things like 40-hour workweeks, child labour laws, mandatory breaks, and minimum wages came through the efforts of ordinary men and women…and the struggle continues. These rights and privileges that so many take for granted can be taken away at any moment, and many of them are already under attack. So while you’re enjoying your cookout with the family or whatever it is you do to celebrate today, please take a moment to thank those who have come before you, and who fight alongside you, for the work they’ve done to make your life better.
