HSPA+ and LTE Radio Equipped BlackBerry PlayBooks Pass Through FCC blackberry 500x273

Research in Motion announced their BlackBerry PlayBook with LTE and HSPA+ capabilities over a year ago, but further news was so scarce that it led to speculation the device had been canceled. This apparently isn’t the case, as two RIM tablets with HSPA+ connectivity and AT&T compatible LTE radios just passed through the FCC. Earlier reports claimed that the tablets will use 1.5GHz processors and will be formally announced around May or June of this year.

RIM’s initial PlayBook models were released in April of last year and weren’t met with the stellar reception that the company probably hoped for. As a former BlackBerry fan who ditched his Curve for an HTC Droid Incredible, I can say that while I like RIM and BlackBerry just fine, the tablet market is already brimming with devices I’d love to own and the PlayBook doesn’t even make a splash on my radar. Hopefully they can find their place with the business crowd.

Considering that they put the PlayBook through a fire sale late last year ($199! Some stores are still selling it at that price), I’m surprised that they’d try again with more or less the same product, only with a new CPU and some new wireless radios. They’ve got to do something different this time around if they want to try at all.
