Blade Runner was mentioned on this site earlier – albeit for a different reason – but do you remember those flying vehicles in the movie? Thanks to Gress Aerospace, those futuristic cars should soon become rather common and most houses will have a landing pad on the roof instead of a conventional garage. The traffic on the roads is already quite difficult at times, but expect it to become a three-dimensional nightmare in the decades to come!

The HyFish – a fuel cell-powered plane – is the brain-child of Swiss engineer Koni Schafroth, who developed an unmanned aircraft shaped like the fastest swimmer in the ocean: the tuna. It is incidentally quite interesting to note that not only the shape of the plane is more reminiscent a shark, but the pronunciation of its name also translates as “shark” in German (“Haifish”).

Further developments will take place with the collaboration of the Institute for Technical Thermodynamics of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Stuttgart, Germany, who used to contribute to BMW’s Formula One team. The goal is to build a two-seater aircraft able to achieve speeds up to 900 Km/h (560 mph) at an altitude of 7,000 m (23,000 feet), with an energy consumption comparable to that of a medium-sized car.
