If there’s one thing this world needs, it’s more contenders in the smartphone market. Bloomberg reportedly has credible sources that say that Amazon is currently developing a smartphone with electronics manufacturer Foxconn. It comes as no surprise that Amazon is looking to compete with the iPhone as well as Android smartphones.

The Kindle Fire Tablet runs on Android, but a heavily modified version, and it’s speculated that Amazon will go the same route with a smartphone. The CEO of Skyhook recently commented that a “major” new Android that is outside of the Google Play ecosystem would be launching this year. The Amazon smartphone could be just that phone.

With Amazon running its own Android appstore, a smartphone would fit into their operation nicely. There’s no information available that would point to a possible release date.
