The Frightful And Disgusting Side Of Evolution

The Frightful And Disgusting Side Of Evolution

Have you ever wondered why you had a stronger avert reaction when confronted to a snake, but less intense when a speeding car passes you by? The car is logically more dangerous, but your fright is far less than when you see a reptile in the wild. How about finding quite normal a scene of open-heart surgery in a hospital TV series, but totally revulsing the sight of an anus transplant in a documentary?

Researchers at the University of California in Los Angeles may have an answer to these questions, along with an insight of how xenophobia and racism arose. The roots of these sometimes totally irrational feelings lie in the evolution of certain emotions that helped our ancestors survive, but which have for some become inadequate in our current world.

The Wii Gets Hack Proofed

ModChip users beware. Nintendo has taken steps to limit and or prevent the use of chips in the latest revisions of the Wii Systems. Of course, this will only slow things down for a while.

Some providers of Wii modification services in Taiwan think Nintendo could adopt BGA (ball grid array) IC packaging to prolong the time needed by hackers to develop new modchips to at least four months. The longer waiting time would likely reduce the willingness of some users to modify the consoles, the sources noted.

DRAM Prices are Coming Down According to Samsung

This is great news for people that are running Vista. A ton of RAM goes a long way to helping that beast of an OS.

The DRAM market is in oversupply right now and it might not recover until the second half of this year, said Chang-Gyu Hwang, president of Samsung Electronics’ semiconductor business. Samsung is the world’s largest producer of DRAM and NAND flash, and many industry watchers pay close attention to its market forecasts.

However, the story is different for flash memory devices as they are seeing an early up trend:

In NAND flash memory, demand is increasing earlier than normal for this time of year, and prices will continue to rise in the second half as the iPhone, iPod, and a host of other products hit the market, said Hwang.
