Organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) are currently used for some mobile phone and mp3 player displays, but they could be marketed on a much broader scale in the near future. A consortium led by the University of Bath, in the UK, is setting up a research program that should soon lead to OLEDs invading every aspect of our lives – from windows that light up at night to yogurt that warns you that it’s gone bad! Such devices are also thought to be quite valuable on pieces of clothing worn by emergency services, displaying appropriate messages in a very visible way. And how about t-shirts communicating your mood during the day, turning from an ugly deep red with the words, “Leave Me Alone, I’m Working” during the day to a nice greenish-blue shade with the message, “Time For A Drink!” at the end of the working hours?
